Internship Program
About the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Internship Program
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office offers unpaid internship opportunities to undergraduate students who are interested in a career in the law enforcement field. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the operations and responsibilities within the sheriff's office while receiving hands-on experience outside of the classroom setting.
Students are selected on a first come, first served basis. There are no numerical limits set, and placements will be based on availability of assignments at the time the requests are received. All interns will begin processing with the receipt of a letter from their educational institution.
Qualifications
- The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Intern Program is available to students attending accredited colleges or universities offering degrees in criminal justice and related fields.
- Applicant must be at least 18-years of age.
- Must maintain all academic requirements and be eligible to obtain a credit for the Internship Program through the college or university.
- Must be able to pass a nationwide criminal history screening assesment.
- NOT HAVE been convicted of any felony
- NOT HAVE been convicted of a misdemeanor involving false statement, perjury or domestic violence
- IN ADDITION, the following areas may result in applicants being suspended from the hiring process: credit history including bankruptcy and collections; past drug use; inappropriate social media; driving history, work history; criminal activity and associations with known criminals; and inappropriate tattoos.
Members of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Department of Personnel and Professional Standards have the final say on the selection of intern applicants to this program.
Available Assignments
Students will have the opportunity to learn and observe the various department operations by being assigned to the listed areas. Areas or divisions considered to be a high risk or that could undermine the police mission, will not be open to interns.
- Communications Center
- Corrections Division
- Patrol Division
- Investigations Division
- Crime Scene Unit
- Traffic Enforcement
- Police Academy Shadow Day featuring the Canine Unit, Mounted Unit and SWAT Team
- Social Services
- Community Engagement
- Recruiting and Selection
When assigned to each section, the section coordinator will be furnished the following:
- Personal History Form
- Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Intern Evaluation Form
- An evaluation form submitted by the educational institution if provided
- A copy of the total assignment schedule
The intern shall be responsible for adherence to all guidelines, regulations and requirements of the department during the term of the internship.

- Fingerprint Certificate and actual fingerprints
- Office of the Sheriff Intern Schedule
- Intern Liability Release Form
