January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month

On Tuesday, January 12, 2021, Sheriff Mike Williams was joined by Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge Mark Hoffman from the Federal Bureau of Investigations - Jacksonville Field Office; State Attorney Melissa Nelson; Council Member LeAnna Cumber; and members of the Northeast
Florida Human Trafficking Coalition to reaffirm their commitment to raising awareness about the issue of slavery and human trafficking locally and throughout the country. 

In 2020, JSO's Integrity and Special Investigations Unit worked with partners to identify and rescue 35 victims, eight of which were juveniles. There were 27 human trafficking and related arrests and two are pending federal indictments.

"Teaching our community the signs to look for and how to report it is one of the many ways we are trying to stop this crime from continuing on the First Coast," said Sheriff Mike Williams.

He went on to say, "No matter if it is noon or one in the morning, know that we are here and will continue to be here to take that call and look into every situation. You just have to take the first step by calling... and reporting what you see."
