Jacksonville's 64 Fallen Officers Remembered at Annual Police Memorial Day Observance
During the evening of Monday, April 3, 2023, survivors, and colleagues gathered at the Fallen Officers Memorial Wall* in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, to pay tribute to the law enforcement professionals who made the ultimate sacrifice in service for this community.
This ceremony remembers the 64 officers who have died in the line of duty in Jacksonville since recordkeeping began in 1840.
The annual Police Memorial Service included a candlelight vigil and speeches from Sheriff T.K. Waters, Mayor Lenny Curry along with a poem reading by Duval County School Police Chief Greg Burton.
During his address, Sheriff Waters, reflected on the city's history, and the sacrifices of the fallen and their families. “Today, we honor each public servant who gave his life for our community. Their individual losses have been grieved by their loved ones. And, although many of our fallen memorialized on this wall are not personally known to those of us who gather here today, we collectively grieve them as we grieve family. We are bonded through common passion and purpose,” said Sheriff Waters.
In addition to the survivors of the fallen, other honored guests in attendance at Monday night's ceremony included Mayor Lenny Curry, Public Defender Charlie Cofer, Clerk of Courts Jody Philips, Chief Assistant State Attorney L.E. Hutton, members of the judiciary and other elected and appointed officials, as well as local law enforcement partners.

*The wall was conceived and brought to fruition in 2017 by local resident, Adam Resch, as his Eagle Scout project and additions have been made to the wall since, including three lifelike statues and an interactive kiosk donated by the Finker-Frenkel Family Foundation.
