Crime Prevention and Safety Education Classes

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office provides a wide variety of programs in several subject areas. Each class is taught by a JSO employee.

Public Records and Fees

Local criminal background checks, traffic crash and offense reports, arrest dockets and miscellaneous agency reports are routinely provided through the Public Counter located at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, 501 E. Bay Street.  Our six substations (link to Your Neighborhood) also provide many of these services in an effort to make access to our records more convenient. All locations are closed on weekends and federal holidays.

In accordance with Florida Statue, a cost estimate will be provided for requests that require extensive research/duplication/review/ redaction. Requestor must agree to pay the estimate before fulfillment of the records request can take place.

Crime scene photos will require review by detective prior to release.
 
Arrest Fraud Investigation – Anyone whose name was falsely used on a traffic citation or arrest and booking report has the option of requesting a fraud investigation. If the name was falsely used on a traffic citation, an affidavit must be obtained from the Traffic Violations Bureau.

If the name was falsely used on an arrest and booking report, a computer search is conducted in an attempt to determine a suspect. In both cases, fingerprints are taken and the Identification Unit will make a determination through fingerprint identification. Fingerprint cards are provided at no charge by JSO for fraud investigations and are available at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, 501 E. Bay Street.

Electronic Fingerprint Services - Electronic fingerprint services are provided at JSO Headquarters in downtown Jacksonville or at one of the locations on the FDLE Authorized Fingerprint Providers List.

Please remember to bring two forms of Identification to the electronic fingerprinting site. At least one of the two types of indentification must contain a photograph and signature.

Evidence and Found Property
The JSO Property & Evidence Unit is responsible for the daily tasks of receiving, storing, returning, and disposing property associated with both criminal and non-criminal matters. Any property submitted as evidence is secured and preserved to maintain integrity and evidentiary value. Other items in custody may include abandoned, lost, or found property for which JSO Property & Evidence personnel will make every attempt to identify the rightful owner, notify them, and facilitate the timely return of their item(s).
 
Pursuant to Florida State Statute, should any property remain unclaimed after a designated timeframe, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has the right to donate it to a nonprofit charitable organization, sell it, or retain it for Agency use.

Claiming Property - General and Currency
Property submitted by any member of law enforcement that was collected while conducting a criminal investigation is classified as evidence and held for 60 days after final disposition of the case. If property remains unclaimed after the 60 days, it is considered abandoned and can be disposed of pursuant to Florida State Statute.
 
In order for a citizen to claim their property classified as evidence, the following requirements must be met:
  • The evidence hold must be removed via authorization from assigned case detective/officer, State Attorney’s Office property release notice, court order, etc.
  • The citizen must be listed as the owner in at least one of JSO’s databases, or be able to provide documentation to prove they are the owner, or provide a court order that orders the release of property to the citizen; and
  • The citizen must provide a legally recognized form of picture identification
  • Appointment must be scheduled in advance to claim currency or firearms. Contact Money Vault personnel at 904.630.8763 or Gun Vault personnel at 904.630.8762 for scheduling
 
Found property and/or property surrendered to a member of law enforcement for safekeeping until an owner can be determined is held 90 days from the date of submission. If found property remains unclaimed after the 90 days, it is considered abandoned and can be disposed of pursuant to Florida State Statute.
 
In order for a citizen to claim found property, the following requirements must be met:
  • If applicable, the citizen should present any letter, report ,or property receipt with a case number to Property & Evidence personnel
  • The citizen must be listed as the owner of the property in at least one of JSO’s databases, or be able to provide proof of ownership (e.g. bill of sale, product packaging with serial number, etc.); and
  • The citizen must provide a legally recognized form of picture identification

Please note:  Citizens may report to JSO’s Property & Evidence Facility during normal business hours and claim most property types without an appointment. However, appointments are required to claim currency and/or firearms, as these types of property are governed by special conditions. Please see below for more information on claiming firearms.
Claiming Firearms
Anyone attempting to claim a firearm is subject to a background check for prior felony convictions and active domestic violence orders. Firearms will not be released to convicted felons or to any individual with an active domestic violence order.
 
Additionally, in order for a citizen to claim a firearm, the following requirements must be met:
  • Appointment must be scheduled in advance by contacting Gun Vault personnel at 904.630.8762
  • The citizen must be listed as the owner of the firearm in at least one of JSO’s databases, or  be able to provide proof of ownership (e.g. receipt, police reports, other valid sources, etc.), or a Court Order/Writ of Replevin is issued by a judge ordering the release of the firearm to that specific individual; and
  • The citizen must provide a legally recognized form of picture identification
Property Auction Information
Pursuant to Florida State Statute 705.103, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office sells a variety of abandoned, lost, and/or unclaimed property through a public auction at PropertyRoom.Com. The items to be auctioned may include electronics, household items, jewelry, sporting goods, and other miscellaneous items. The items remain on auction until they are sold or disposed.

Prescription Drug Drop Information

The drop box, provided by the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI), allows citizens to anonymously dispose of unused and outdated medications and prescriptions for proper disposal. The box is located at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, Police Memorial Building, 501 E. Bay Street, Jacksonville, FL 32202 – Forsyth Street entrance. The Forsyth Street lobby is open from 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily.

Guidelines:

  • Only prescription and over-the-counter medications that are in a pill or patch form may be deposited.
  • No loose pills may be deposited.
  • Drugs must be in a container such as a pill bottle, box, blister pack, or zip lock bag.
  • No liquids, gels, needles, aerosols, or biohazard materials may be deposited.
  • Businesses, such as a clinic or pharmacies, wishing to dispose of unwanted stock are not permitted to use this drop box. These DEA registrants must follow Federal Regulation 21CFR1307.21 for disposal of unwanted stock.
  • You are advised to scratch through or remove personal information from the label.

 

Safer Transaction

With the popularity of online marketplaces comes the challenge of “Where can I safely meet a buyer or seller for this transaction?”

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office headquarters in downtown Jacksonville (501 E. Bay Street, Jacksonville, FL 32202) and JSO’s six substations conveniently located throughout the city provides multiple locations where you can conduct an exchange of legal merchandise.

Citizens are welcome to utilize any of the seven manned locations, either in the lobby or parking lot. All of the locations listed below are open for business from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the exception of the Forsyth Street lobby of the Police Memorial Building which is open from 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily.

Secondary Employment/Hiring an Off-Duty Police Officer

Secondary Employment simply means that persons/businesses in the community may request to employ the services of a JSO police officer/supervisor in an off-duty capacity.

This privilege is extended to officers/supervisors in good standing and that have received approval from the agency prior to any off-duty work.  Additionally, officers/supervisors who work in this capacity do so on a voluntary basis. Occasionally, the request for personnel to work exceeds the resources we have available due to these challenges the rate of pay may fluctuate.

Extra Duty Solutions (EDS) manages public requests for a police officer/supervisor to staff an event.
